Tonight's impending matchup between the Arizona Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers means three things:
1. The Niners were supposed to be good this year. Monday Night Football always picks its games because it wants to showcase a possible "Game of the Week." Well the Niners have certainly ruined this matchup. Wildly disappointing in every way possible, the Niners are wallowing in mediocrity with no signs of improvement. J.T. O'Sullivan has finally and mercifully been benched after leading the league in turnovers for the first eight weeks of the season. Now it's Shaun Hill's turn. Hill looked serviceable in limited time last season before getting hurt. Unfortunately for him, he's Shaun Hill.
2. I may end up shutting the game off out of embarrassment. There is no way I will watch this game in public. It will be too difficult. Instead I will go to the gym after work and casually watch from my vantage point on an exercise bike. By the time I get home the game will most likely be out of hand. Trying to cheer for poorly managed and coached franchises is not easy.
3. This game has huge fantasy implications for Matt and I. As co-owners, we have a sizeable lead headed into tonight with Arizona's defense going, but we are going against Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald. I hope Warner's thumbs fall off and that they run it 60 times.
The most likely scenario for tonight involves Kurt Warner, whom Niners fans already despise from his glory days with the Rams, carving up the Niners defense all night, Warner and Fitzgerald lighting it up causing Matt and I to lose... and possibly Frank Gore or Patrick Willis leaving with an injury. That's what I'm prepared for.
Some lingering thoughts from yesterday's games:
Rex Grossman still sucks.
Shhhhh...The Raven's are positioning themselves as AFC favorites.
Mason Crosby's missed field goal cost the Packers the game and might cost Matt and I our fantasy game this week. We feel Mike McCarthy's pain.
Are the Colts good? Are the Steelers not that good? Does Ben Roethlisberger stink? Is he hurt? How bad is their offensive line? How bad did Marvin Harrison look? That game left me with a lot of questions and no answers.
So much for the rise of the Bills. Trent Edwards has looked terrible the last couple weeks.
Jake Delhomme went 7-for--27 for 72 yards and 4 interceptions...and the Panthers still won by 11 points. Long live Al Davis.
The Chargers beat the Chiefs at home by one. The Chiefs might've pulled it out if they didn't call the worst play ever for the 2-point conversion attempt. All of it added up to the fact that the AFC West might be battling the NFC West for worst division in football. Stay tuned!
The Giants fended off the Eagles, who can't finish games, to take firm control of the NFC East.
The Titans are 9-0 without their starting quarterback. They were held to 20 yards rushing yesterday and still won because Kerry Collins picked apart the Bears defense. Kerry Collins! You know what the funny thing is? If you had asked me or just about anyone else last year, who they'd rather have as a back up, Kerry Collins or Brad Johnson, almost everyone would have gone with Brad Johnson. Well, I would have anyway. In a related story, I'm an idiot.
When asked what positions the Rams need to address via the draft and free agency in the off season, Rams beat writer Jim Thomas responded, "Everything but punter and place kicker." Same old sorry ass Rams! Yes! I haven't been able to say that since Steve Young got concussed on the very field that the Niners are playing on tonight. Now excuse me while I go sit on my couch in my Roger Craig jersey and watch my 49ers dynasty VHS tape for the 9,000th time.
We lost by two points.
